In the last couple of articles we’ve been focussing on WA Innovators and some of the key facts they need to know. Western Australia is home to technically brilliant innovators, yet the landscape for "Day Zero" Startups (for clarity, that’s the idea stage of a startup!) is fundamentally broken.
Currently, founders with prospective ideas face a "Canyon of Death":
Next to Zero genuine WA pre-seed funders. We understand why - there is limited capital and way too many ideas, so focussing on startups with traction makes sense.
A heavy reliance on FFF - Friends, Family, and "Fools" (not a fan of this phrase - investing in ideas doesn’t make you a fool!) to get off the ground.
No formal investment pipelines connecting early ideas to mature capital.
A thin industry base (forcing a need for high levels of commercial knowledge), dominated by Tier 1 and Tier 2 companies, forcing startups to become commercially savvy very quickly

We’re looking to be a leader in the WA Day Zero space. By combining pre-seed funding with high-quality commercial support, we’ll ensure technically brilliant founders don't hit a roadblock before they’ve even started.
We’re not the only ones trying to help innovators or very early stage startups - Curtin, CORE, CERI and others are doing what they can….but there are too many ideas. We’re going to work collaboratively with providers and investors to create real investor pipelines, pushing WA back to the top of the table.
